Easter Week

I was so excited for the Easter holidays and Lovely warm springtime weather bringing all the flowers.  I absolutely Love holidays & celebrating good times with family and friends.

This week started off with a bang.  Sunday night was the season finale of The Walking Dead and then  we always watch Talking Dead afterwards to rehash.  Emily and I Love watching that show and this was quite a finale!  We had loads of fun watching.  Monday we went out for treats & a movie.

Here's what I'm Loving:

Emily & I started off Easter week by having lunch at Starbucks so we could get our half price happy hour frappuccinos.

I ordered the Limited edition Birthday cake flavor which was a delicious combo of vanilla and hazelnut flavors and Emily got green tea.

Both were topped with a generous swirl of raspberry pink whipped cream.
What a treat!
Afterward we had a nice shop at Target starting with the One Spot stuff then we stocked up on my very favorite Easter candy,

White chocolate bunnies,
Dove coconut creme eggs, which are insanely good
and Reese's peanut butter eggs
~a trifecta of yumminess

What I've been watching:

Oh the costumes were insanely amazing, as was the set design.  The cast was outstanding  And the acting was Divine, every actor was uniquely suited for the role and played it so very well, so very entertaining.

This wedding dress is so dreamy!

Golly, the costumes were really something!
And the hats --perfection!

Helena Bonham Carter was funny & fantastic as the Fairy Godmother.  One of my favorite parts is when she does her magic turning the pumpkins into that glorious gold coach then transforms Cinderella's spectacular outfit.
Afterwards we went to one of our favorite restaurants and discussed the details over dinner.  We both dreamed of what it would be like to cosplay those costumes.
We Loved every minute of it!

Obsessed With:

Easter Lillies smell like springtime!
I picked this one up at Walmart along with a ham for the holiday and my prescription.  I plopped it in a cute bucket I picked up at Target earlier in the week.

I got these Ranunculus from Walmart, too.
The flowers are so cute and perfect and these colors, aren't they dreamy?

Thrifty Finds:

I found a few cute old books and a mini donut pan.  I'm always on the lookout for old gardening books and any cool book with a pink binding.  I couldn't believe my luck when I found the donut pan.  I will surely put it to good use.

I spied these fantastic Retro-Wonderful pumps at my fav Goodwill, size 7, which is Emily's size.  I thought they'd go great with a pretty Easter dress.  Alas, Emily started feeling yucky on Good Friday and soon was running a fever.  So we had to cancel all our fun plans for the holiday weekend.  Even though our Easter was very low key the weather was beautiful, my garden looked dreamy and I just had to count my blessings.

Spring time is so Lovely and I love strolling through my garden every day to see what is poking up out of the earth or coming into bloom.

Here's What I'm Needing:

This new makeup line from Mac!  Isn't it gorgeous?  And the colors are soft pretty pinky beiges and browns that I like and that I would actually wear.  I've got to get to Sephora or Ulta to check them out.  Don't you Love beautiful make up?

Loved this message from the movie.
It's a great motto.
Have you seen it?

Highlights of my Week

There has been a lot of cold, gray rainy days.
Then we had the time change.
All of a sudden it is Spring Time!

The first sign of spring to me is
when I see the bright, pretty colors of the crocus blooming in my garden.

This stripey one is extra pretty!
This past week you can find me in the garden cleaning up the winter blanket of leaves and uncovering the green shoots.

A couple of warm sunny days and the daffodils pop open.
I like how they dance in the spring breeze.

Here's what I'm Loving:

This is my favorite daffodil.
Although it is much smaller than some varieties it has a wonderful honeysuckle type scent.  I like to think of it as an old fashioned kind because it came with our house that is over 100 years old.  I especially love this colour combination of yellows with the blue of the hyacinth.

Enjoying and Listening to:

One rainy evening we traveled Downtown with friends for dinner at Mellow Mushroom.  I took this photo of my view looking out of the restaurant while waiting for the yummy pizza.

After dinner we walked across the street to the Stevens Center to see
the opera, The Magic Flute by Mozart
on 'Student Night' which is the final dress rehearsal of the Piedmont Opera and the Winston-Salem Symphony.  So my daughter got to see it for free and my ticket was only $15 for an evening of entertainment and culture.  What a bargain!
I Loved the music, the costumes and Papageno!
My favorite part was the Queen of the Night's aria.   So sublime!

I like old buildings so I took a few photos of the restored neoclassical theater while waiting for the the show to begin.  Lots of beautiful details in the architecture I wanted to remember.

This chandelier must be 8-9 ft across and it sure does sparkle.

These impressive structures are on either side of the stage that look to have something to do with sound perhaps when it was a silent movie theater.

I don't know how many times I've been to this theater, over a dozen for sure but I don't think I ever noticed this cool massive light that is above the seats.  The quality of this picture is terrible but at least I'll remember just how beautiful it is.

What I've been watching:

I've caught this series on and off airing on PBS over the years and always Love watching it.
I just started binge watching it on Netflix this month and I'm thrilled there are so many episodes I haven't seen.
Hercule Poirot is my favorite Agatha Christi character maybe it is because of the actor's fantastic portrayal as the somewhat fussy, particular, dandy persona with super intellect which
he refers to as his little gray cells.  Set in the mid 1930's with wonderful art deco design details, sets and costumes, the show revolves around mystery, murder and intrigue which Monsieur Poirot always figures out with charm and panache.

What I've been cooking:

Buddha's Delight soup or just Buddha soup

I came across the original recipe in a book about soups I got from a second hand book store and I've put my own spin and adaptations on it over the years.

It is hardy, delicious and good for you with all those tasty wonderful vegetables.

Fav veg:
pea pods
tiny broccoli florets
thinly sliced carrots
bell peppers
green onion
mushrooms
celery
baby bok choy

In a large pot, put in the whole leftover rotisserie chicken, bones and all and heat the broth to boiling.  We want to get the flavor from the bones into the broth even though the meat is already cooked and doesn't need additional cooking. Reduce heat to low and simmer for up to an hour or so.  While the broth is simmering I do the cutting up and preparing of all the different veg.

I go to Trader Joe's to get the most gorgeous organic vegetables that are the best prices.  I get out my mandolin slicer and use it to make perfect sized carrot coins.

The rest of the veg I chop by hand refining my knife skills, practice, practice!  I love how the stem end of the baby bok choy looks like a pretty rose when sliced.  It's my fav part to eat!

Do you see my friendly kitty, Ms. Zoe Pudding Pop watching over my work?
It makes me giggle when my pets do cute silly things.
She just sat there watching, probably wondering why she smelled chicken but did not see ANY.

Assembling the soup
Remove the carcass from the pot and let it cool.  Sometimes I pop it in the fridge or freezer until it cools enough to touch so I can remove all the bits of meat, chopping into bite sized pieces.
When all the veg and meat is chopped and ready it's time to assemble the soup, cooking each part in stages.

Optional: frozen Costco dumplings and/ or cellophane noodles.  These yummies add calories and I leave them out when I want to cut back and eat super healthy.  I used them as enticements to lure fussy eaters into consuming my good for you veg.  Cellophane noodles are clear noodles found in any grocery store's Asian food section.

First drop in dumplings minding the time they need to cook thoroughly,
drop in cellophane noodles that need 2-4 mins to cook.

Next drop in pea pods, tiny broccoli florets and sliced carrot that need 3 mins to cook.
Lastly drop in green onion, mushrooms, celery, baby bok choy & cooked cut up chicken that needs only 1 min to cook.

My Thrifty Finds:

One morning I found this lovely orange juice carafe at my Favorite Goodwill for $2.
The next day I spied a matching juice glass priced $1 at another Goodwill in the next town over.
Both perfectly match the one I already had.

The bright colors remind me of warmer weather so I decided to display them on my kitchen window shelves with some of my other glassware.

I'm always on the lookout for old and beautiful books.
There are certain favorite authors that I will always want to buy, classic writers like Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Shakespeare, etc that I will snatch up, as well as contemporary popular writers like Agatha Christie, Stephen King, David Sedaris & Dean Koontz to name a few.

What a find these gems were!
Isn't the Jane Austen a beautiful book?  All were less than $2 found at Goodwill.
I should've snapped a photo of the H.G.Wells book with the tattered cover off.  It was published in the 1950's. I've displayed all of them prominently on my hall bookshelves.  Seeing them when I pass by makes me smile, especially the Jane Austen and H. G. Wells which are particularly noticeable.

What we've been drinking:

Did you get a Shamrock shake from McDonald's, yet?  We like to have one in the spring time with a couple of those grilled onion cheeseburgers from the Dollar Menu.  Ideally, it makes for a fun picnic to nibble and sip among the daffodils celebrating spring.  We like to get the traditional vanilla mint shake that tastes like  mint chocolate chip ice cream with out the chocolate chips.  You can ask for chocolate sauce or drizzle when you order your shamrock shake but I like the tradition plain.

Another yummy treat we had was Starbuck's new Tiramisu flavored drinks. I had earned another free reward. {I'm a gold card member!}  So we ordered a massive venti sized Tiramisu frappuccino for FREE and a chocolate caramel muffin to go with it, then had a nice chat about the upcoming Anime conventions and costumes Emily is dreaming about creating.

Want to learn more about Starbuck's Free Rewards?

Hope you had a fun week, too!
Happy Spring!

Birthdays & Valentines

We found this tiny fur hat at Target and decided it was so cute and funny we had to get it.
It was on clearance!

It looked beyond cute on both of our sweet kitties and we tortured them with it for a few minutes while they were trying to nap in the sun puddle.

 hehe, yep

I still read magazines.  Do you ?
I like Martha Stewart Living, Entertainment Weekly, Southern Living, Fine Gardening & Carolina Gardener to name a few.  I borrow them from my library.
The new March issue of Country Living magazine has a gorgeous article entitled, The Thrill of the Hunt, about collecting Jadite.
I've been an avid collector of these beautiful dishes & glassware for many, many years.  After seeing this article I'm inspired to gather up all my the pieces in my collection and arrange it in a similarly cute display.
Seriously, how cute is that?

Emily & I decided to spend Friday the 13th at the mall.
We did some window shopping, got some Starbucks and met our girlfriends for a lovely Gal-entines dinner at Ruby Tuesday and more shopping afterwards.

The Godiva chocolate store was packed!
I contented myself with only a photo of the cute heart shaped candy boxes. Sigh.

Emily used one of my Free Rewards and ordered a venti white chocolate mocha with raspberry syrup. Doesn't that look amazing?  Mine was a iced coffee with sugar free vanilla.

I enjoyed a tasty Valentine's Day breakfast together with my girls & Steve at a restaurant they came across called Breakfast Anytime. Doesn't Emily's order of Eggs Benedict look scrumptious?  That girl knows how to eat!  My veggie omelet & hash browns were super with enough leftover for dinner.  Afterwards we did some thrifting.  It was a perfect way to spend a Saturday.

My thrifty finds:

I absolutely love treasure hunting in thrift shops, consignment stores and Goodwill.  Lately, I've been finding some remarkable things.  A few places I frequent sell hardcover books for .99 cents while other places are $1.99 so I love to pop in and see if there's anything cute that catches my eye.

Then I got the notion to take the dust covers off some books and create this rainbow shelf.  I had seen this organization technique on social media and thought it was very pleasing to eye.  I like to do something similar with my sock drawer and my wardrobe although I do tend to wear a lot of black.

I found this beautiful french book and on another shelf close by this nifty box of frenchy flash cards.  The little pink cat is a lipgloss I saw at Forever 21 during our Gal-entine excursion to the mall and had to have it.  Too cute!

I found the peach Fire-King baking dish and that box at the same store.  As soon as I laid my eyes on them I scooped them up immediately and peeked at the price tag knowing I just had to have them.  It was only .99 cents for the box of cookie cutters and either $2 or $3 for the dish.  I just love the graphics on the box of Halloween themed cookie cutters.  I can't wait to use them both in my Halloween displays this year.
I should've taken another photo of them inside the box because they are cute but just have the tiniest bit of rust starting in the corners.  I think I will have to give them a good soak & a scrub to get that rust off of there before I use them.  Hopefully, the rust will come right off.
Let me know if you have any advice on scrubbing off rust, ok?

Made a Starbucks‬  run after a fasting blood draw one morning at the Doctors.
I couldn't help embellishing those darling hearts on the side of the special Valentines cup with my cute minty Sharpie and pink marker.  Pink and mint look so wonderful together, don't you think?

Recently, we celebrated with a Birthday Breakfast for my daughter Sarah.  I put up a few decorations and made some yummy food in her honor.

I think these fruit cups turned out so cute.  I wanted to make Sarah's fruit cup look extra special so i topped it with the adorable ballerina vintage cake topper.  I love the look of fresh fruit!

Read more about it on my other blog Make it special party planning

I Just started reading:

I put in a request for Stephen King's latest book at my library and I've been waiting patiently for the hold to come through and at last it was my turn.

Currently eating/ Loving:

My fruity mix!
I fill my blender with all kinds of yummy fruit, some frozen some not.  This batch had blueberries, cranberries, strawberries, banana, mango, pineapple and I had a kiwi, starfruit & pear leftover that were ripening.
Then I add chia seeds, kale, fill with coconut water and blitz !
I pour off into these small plastic containers and freeze them.  Then I eat/drink one almost every day for breakfast.  Taste great and they've got all that fiber.

Lately, I have been feeling sad because my camera has not been working very well at all.  I couldn't figure out what had changed, why the photos were so blurry.
Was it my failing eyesight?  I really need to go to the eye doctor and get my prescription updated.
I even was using a tripod and still there was not the sharpness and clarity I wanted to see.
So disappointing.
Maybe my daughter, Sarah's lovely photos had spoiled me?
Then it finally dawned on me as I was cleaning my eyeglasses and sure enough the lens was dirty with what looked like water spots!  Did I use the camera months ago in the rain for crying out loud?  Hopefully I can wipe the lens clean with a special cloth and go back to taking some special photos.  It won't be long before spring comes bringing life back into my garden.

And with that I leave you.  Hope you are having a sunny day.
